The Chicago Street Course marked a historic milestone for NASCAR when it hosted the sport's first-ever Cup Series street race on July 2, 2023. The concept was first developed and tested virtually on the iRacing platform in 2021 before being brought to life. The 2.14-mile, 12-turn temporary circuit winds through the iconic Grant Park and downtown Chicago, utilizing famous roads like Lake Shore Drive and Michigan Avenue against a backdrop of the city's skyline and Buckingham Fountain. The tight, 90-degree corners and narrow confines demand immense precision from drivers. The inaugural event was a massive success, attracting a new audience and producing a stunning result when New Zealand Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen won the race in his first-ever NASCAR start, a feat not accomplished since 1963. The event represents a bold initiative by NASCAR to bring racing to new, urban markets.
