Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany (View on Map)
The Hockenheimring, located in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, is a historic circuit that opened in 1932 as a high-speed test track for Mercedes-Benz. Its original layout was a nearly 8 km monster, comprised mainly of long, flat-out straights through the forest, connected by two sweeping corners. The track was dramatically shortened and redesigned in 2002, eliminating the long forest sections in favor of a more modern, spectator-friendly 4.574 km (2.842-mile) layout. The modern circuit retains the famous stadium section, the 'Motodrom,' which provides an incredible amphitheater-like atmosphere for fans. Hockenheim hosted the Formula 1 German Grand Prix for many years, alternating with the Nürburgring, and is known for its long Parabolika straight leading into a tight hairpin, a prime overtaking spot. Today, it hosts major events like the DTM and the NitrOlympX drag racing festival.
