Track Details

From 1992 to 2022, the Detroit Grand Prix was held on a temporary street circuit on Belle Isle, a picturesque island park in the Detroit River. The 2.35-mile, 14-turn course was known for being tight, bumpy, and incredibly challenging, with a mix of concrete and asphalt surfaces that tested driver skill and car setup. The narrow confines and unforgiving walls left little room for error. The event began as a CART series race and later became a staple of the IndyCar Series calendar, often featuring a unique "Dual in Detroit" doubleheader format with races on both Saturday and Sunday. While praised for its scenic setting, the event also faced logistical challenges and criticism regarding its use of a public park. In 2023, the Detroit Grand Prix returned to a new circuit on the downtown streets of Detroit, ending the Belle Isle era.
