Track Details

Located on the man-made Île Notre-Dame in Montreal, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a unique, semi-permanent street circuit that has hosted the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix since 1978. The 4.361 km (2.710-mile) track is known for its high-speed nature, combining long straights with slow, heavy-braking chicanes that place a premium on engine power and braking performance. This layout often leads to exciting and unpredictable races. Its most famous feature is the final chicane leading onto the pit straight, which was nicknamed the 'Wall of Champions' after three former World Champions—Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher, and Jacques Villeneuve—all crashed into it during the 1999 Grand Prix. The circuit was renamed in 1982 to honor the late Canadian F1 legend Gilles Villeneuve, who won the inaugural race at the track in 1978.
